Taranczewski ist ein Trio aus Berlin. Kennern von Film-Soundtracks mag der Name Olaf Taranczewski ein Begriff sein, für alle anderen kommt die Band Taranczewski aus dem Nichts, und doch scheint es schon nach wenigen Tönen, sie wäre schon immer da gewesen.

Dieser Eindruck entsteht nicht zufällig. Pianist Olaf Taranczewski kennt Bassist Jean-Philippe Wadle und Drummer Benedikt Stehle seit Jahrzehnten, und doch haben sie in dieser Konstellation noch nie gemeinsam gespielt. Der Pianist ist zwar Komponist und Namensgeber der Band, doch wie man auf dem Debütalbum „When I Was“ unschwer hört, handelt es sich bei Taranczewski um ein stabiles Dreieck, dessen Impulse und spielerischen Anteile gleichmäßig und – noch wichtiger – gleichberechtigt verteilt sind.

Die Formvollendung der Klassik, die nonchalante Spontaneität von Jazz-Klavier-Trios wie zum Beispiel Bill Evans, die Emotionalität von Americana Music, die verbindliche Nahbarkeit von Fusion Music, das epische Klangverständnis von Filmsoundtracks, die akkumulierte Reduziertheit von Minimal Music, der narrative Erzählfluss von Moritaten, die melancholische Fröhlichkeit von jiddischer Musik, die individuelle Ausdruckskraft von Chansons – all das findet auf „When I Was“ zu einer Einheit, die man so noch nicht gehört hat.

Taranczewski is a trio from Berlin. Connoisseurs of film soundtracks may be familiar with the name Olaf Taranczewski, but for everyone else the band Taranczewski comes out of nowhere, and yet after just a few notes it seems as if it has always been there.

This impression is no coincidence. Pianist Olaf Taranczewski has known bassist Jean-Philippe Wadle and drummer Benedikt Stehle for decades, and yet they have never played together in this constellation. The pianist may be the composer and namesake of the band, but as you can easily hear on the debut album ‘When I Was’, Taranczewski is a stable triangle whose impulses and playing parts are evenly and – more importantly – equally distributed.
